About SOMPO Digital Lab
SOMPO Digital Lab drives the SOMPO Group's digital, data, and AI strategy.
Its goal is to create innovative solutions by leveraging digital technologies such as AI and LLMs (large language models).
Through the SOMPO Group’s business infrastructure, the application of new technologies,
and collaboration with partners, SOMPO Digital Lab leads the Group’s overall DDAX (*) and continues to enhance corporate value.

DDAX (Digital, Data, and AI Transformation) refers to the process of achieving business transformation and creating new value through the integrated application of technologies and expertise related to digital, data, and AI.
Structure
Our Role
Our organization is structured to support both the Horizontal DDAX
and the Vertical DDAX within the SOMPO Group. With clearly defined roles, we pursue our initiatives through these two complementary approaches.
Horizontal DDAX Details

Resource Management
A hub function that centrally manages project resources across the entire department. We handle a wide range of cross-functional tasks, from managing project reviews to matching specialized talent and sharing knowledge within the organization. By maximizing the strengths of each team, we efficiently and strategically support the Group’s overall digital transformation.

Digital Proof of Concept (PoC)
We collaborate with each business division to plan and validate solutions for operational challenges using digital technologies. After carefully assessing on-site needs, we provide end-to-end support—from project review to the execution and evaluation of proof-of-concept experiments. Working closely with frontline teams, we drive the Group's digital, data, and AI strategy forward.

Agile In-House Development (Design & Engineering)
From service planning to UI/UX design, development, release, and quality assurance, we consistently execute experience design and engineering as a single, integrated team. Through agile development, we iterate rapidly and continuously to steadily bring the Group’s digital services to life.

In-House Development (Infrastructure/Architecture)
We support the Group’s digital infrastructure by leveraging cloud-native technologies and SRE (Site Reliability Engineering). We handle everything from system design optimized for the entire organization to the stable operation of systems through automation, thereby improving development efficiency and reliability.

DDAX Talent Development
Aiming to raise the DDAX literacy of every Group employee, we offer a wide range of training programs, from digital fundamentals to applied generative AI, data analysis, and design thinking. As of the end of FY2024, more than 30,000 employees across our Group companies had taken the training. Through these programs, we are building the talent that underpins the Group's digital transformation.

Data Utilization and Analysis
We utilize “JOY,” the Group’s shared data utilization platform, and Palantir’s data integration platform “Foundry.” Through data integration, visualization, and analysis, we optimize and streamline business operations while also providing training support based on our skills and expertise to drive corporate cultural transformation.

Data Management
To maximize the benefits of data utilization, we plan and drive the development, maintenance, and operation of a Group-wide data utilization platform, as well as the design of various policies and operational frameworks. This initiative is becoming increasingly important as the use of AI advances.

Overseas Labs
Based in Silicon Valley, we conduct research on the latest digital technologies and business models and build local networks.
Leveraging access to the ecosystems of venture capital firms and major tech companies, we support the Group’s innovation efforts and the promotion of DDAX from a global perspective.

Our organization is composed of digital planning professionals with diverse backgrounds and specialists in the digital and data fields.
We have a wide range of tools and networks available within the organization, enabling us to provide end-to-end support for digital, data, and AI strategy projects—from research and planning through to production implementation. Through the in-house development of specialized functions, we accumulate knowledge and expertise within the organization. This establishes a strategic framework that is not dependent on any single individual.

Tokyo
The control tower responsible for driving innovation across the SOMPO Group. It supports proof-of-concept testing and research and development for the Group’s businesses.
Launched in 2016, SOMPO Digital Lab Tokyo has laid the foundation for driving innovation across the SOMPO Group. Through collaboration with Silicon Valley Lab, it conducts research on cutting-edge technologies, carries out rapid proof-of-concept experiments using agile development, and develops various data strategies led by data scientists. It has established a framework to drive transformation across the Group, ranging from the digital transformation (DX) of existing businesses to the creation of new businesses.

SOMPO Digital Lab Silicon Valley gathers information on the latest digital technologies and builds networks with local partners.
It leverages Silicon Valley’s innovation ecosystem to bring the latest technologies and insights to the SOMPO Group.
An expert international team specializing in insurance and wellbeing is working with startups, accelerators, and venture capital firms to create new customer value through prototype development and proof-of-concept initiatives.
